Definition
Emerging technologies are technical innovations that represent progressive developments within a field for competitive advantage. They also include converging technologies, which are different fields moving towards stronger inter-connection and similar goals. These technologies can be either new or old.
Countries classified as emerging markets typically invest in more productive capacity and adopt free market economic principles. They also tend to grow rapidly and industrialize. They usually focus on export led growth and import substituting industrialization. They may also pursue domestic programs to promote economic growth.
In i-Ready, students are placed into the Emerging K lesson type if they are showing an early level of mastery in phonics and phonological awareness. This includes learning to recognize letters, rhyming words, and blending syllables. This level is also referred to as Level AA on the Diagnostic results screen. Teachers should carefully monitor the progress of students who are in this lesson type and ensure they are making steady, visible progress.
Phonological awareness
Phonological awareness is the ability to hear and identify different sounds in spoken words. This skill set is a precursor to reading and spelling, and it begins at the earliest stages of speech development. It is also an integral part of systematic synthetic phonics instruction. It encompasses skills like recognizing rhyme and alliteration, identifying the number of sounds in a word, separating words into syllables, and hearing and manipulating the individual sounds in words.
Students who have strong phonological awareness skills are much more likely to become proficient readers. This skill set allows them to map written letters to speech sounds, a fundamental step in the reading process.

In addition to rhyming and blending syllables, i-Ready phonological awareness lessons include onset-rime segments and full phonemic awareness. Students can also practice substituting, reversing, and deleting phonemes to build this critical skill set.
Vocabulary
The more words students know, the easier it is for them to comprehend what they read. Vocabulary instruction is a crucial component of reading comprehension, and research has shown that high-quality vocabulary instruction can significantly improve students’ comprehension. Students who have low vocabulary scores generally have lower comprehension levels, while students with high vocabulary levels often have high reading comprehension (Elleman & Lindo, 2002).
